Why did you pick this field of study? Why were you drawn to this field?

I've always been interested in environmental science, since high school biology class.  But I didn't continue my studies because I couldn't pinpoint exactly what I wanted to do with an environmental science degree - other than enjoying the subject matter.  Then after getting a degree in Landscape Architecture and subsequently working as a Realtor, I realized that I wanted to combine my love for science and the environment with understanding consumer behavior and the urban environment.  Sustainable Systems seemed like a great way to understand how to incorporate business, people and science.  I would like to do something that allows me to work with renewable energy, lifecycle of products and how people exist in the urban environment, whether that be through consulting, working for a solar company or getting a job at the EPA.

So far, what do you like best about your program?
I am so pleased with the span and breadth of subject matter covered in the courses offered.  Policy, energy systems, green building, ecology, economics, strategy and business are all available and taught by true leaders in academia.  I also think it's fantastic that we have access to classes in other programs as well.

Describe your research interests and experiences at SNRE.

Having the opportunity to do a master's project on a team will be such an extraordinary opportunity for research - I'm really looking forward to that. I'm interested in the built environment, converting to more efficient use of energy, cleaner methods of using water and disposing of waste.  I'd be interested in understanding the possibility of these transitions in homes and businesses, the cost return on this shift and how consumers need to receive this information to insure its adoption. My group project in my Sustainable Energy Systems class revolves around that to an extent, so it's exciting to be doing in the classroom something that truly translates to real life work.

What do you plan to do after graduation?
Get a job. Live somewhere new. Do I really need to know more at this point?

What advice do you have for incoming SNRE students?
Discover your own personal strengths, get involved in on-campus clubs and activities and, above all, have conversations with students, faculty and visiting professionals as often as possible - as it will lead to helping you pinpoint exactly what you want to do.

What is your favorite environment-themed Web site and why?
Right now, I'm on the SNRE Web site most often.  There are links to green job search Web sites, Erecruiter, resources to help with my resume and interviewing, past student testimonials about careers and internships and a great timeline for the year. I'm on it all the time.

How do you relax when not studying?
I enjoy a glass of wine with live jazz music or a fun game of poker with friends.
