A recent article in The New York Times details the efforts of Quebec company Enerkem to convert trash into a synthetic gas that can be used in creating biofuels. "According to the University of Michigan’s Center for Sustainable Systems," the article states,  "the United States produces almost 250 million tons of municipal solid waste each year, with just under 60 percent destined for landfill."  The process used by Enerkem will produce ethanol from waste at several landfills in Canada.
