Don Scavia, SNRE professor and director of the Graham Environmental Sustainability Institute, is quoted in a Mother Nature News article about potential growth of the Gulf of Mexico 'dead zone' due to increases in U.S. biofuel production.  The dead zone, or hypoxic (oxygen-starved) region, is largely caused by nutrient runoff from fertilizer use.  "The growth of these dead zones is an ecological time bomb," Scavia says.
