Meet Terence Wang: graduate student – Master of Landscape Architecture, Class of 2016

What is your master's project all about?
I recently returned from a site visit in Reno as part of his master’s project with Sierra Nevada Journeys, an organization that delivers innovative outdoor, science-based education programs for youth to develop critical thinking skills and to inspire natural resource stewardship. As the nonprofit’s 204-bed, 1,500 acre science campus in Northern California is reaching physical capacity, our team is analyzing and implementing a master facility growth plan. My role in the master’s project focuses on landscape architecture solutions for physical expansion that maximize sustainability by harnessing the local ecology.
What real-world projects have you worked on in your SNRE classes?
I recently created a 30-year vision for the city of Ypsilanti focusing on forging a healthy community and, ultimately, a greater life expectancy for residents. The plan includes systems-based approaches that would boost human health and wellbeing via increased access to fresh produce, accessible bike routes, and social events. I am currently participating in a similar urban planning project for the city of Lansing.
Have you done any freelance design work?
Yes, I recently completed a private interior design project in China. Over the course of four months, I worked with a client to transform the first floor of a house into a classroom for French culinary instruction. The project encompassed both residential and business aspects of a house. The first floor has a big kitchen with a classroom section and a section for producing desserts for a store the client runs nearby, a reception area, and space for relaxtation. The second floor is the employees' private working space, as well as their bedroom.
Where do you see yourself after graduation?
For the next step, I am planning to move to San Francisco and am on the hunt for a job there in digital rendering, visualization, and 3D modeling.
