This Master's Project is the second phase of work and one component of the larger MELDI "Examining Disparities" project, which aims to "promote strategies for enhancing food security of underserved populations in the state (of Michigan) - through "research, education and extension activities."  Michigan was identified as a state from which larger lessons on global food security issues could be drawn.
