Students conduct prescribed burn at Nichols Arboretum

Bob Grese's ecological restoration class burns again!  For nearly 20 years, Grese, who is both SNRE Professor and Director of Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum, has been conducting prescribed burns in the Dow Field area of Nichols Arboretum with staff from the Arb and students from SNRE.

SNRE Out and About

Once again the landscape architecture students made their way to the ASLA annual meeting, held in fall 2008 in Philadelphia, Pa. The University of Michigan MLA program kicked off the weekend with a  cocktail reception sponsored by SNRE’s Office of Development and Alumni Relations. Current students were able to meet alumni and gain feedback on life after SNRE.

Gaining a competitive edge

In fall 2008, M.L.A. student Lindsey Miller participated in the third annual Ed Bacon Student Design Competition. The theme was Rebuild/Revive and focused on the Ludlow neighborhood in north Philadelphia. Ludlow, like many central neighborhoods in post-industrial cities, has experienced a large population loss over the years.

As co-chair of the community service committee for the University of Michigan ASLA student chapter, an interesting opportunity developed to speak about landscape architecture to an audience of middle school students.

Matthaei Botanical Gardens Kiosks

In the fall 2008 semester, second-year M.L.A. students completed their first design-build project for research
investigator and adjunct associate professor Byoung-Suk Kweon’s Materials and Methods class. Asked to create two new information kiosks for the Matthaei Botanical Gardens, the students split into two groups and began with preliminary design concepts inspired by nearby visual cues.
