Class Notes
"Having both a MS and a JD from the University of Michigan, it is hard to know which one opens the most doors, but they both do." Jerry Gidner, 1990 joint SNRE/LAW alumnus alum was recently appointed Director of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Having lived and worked in Washington D.C. for the past 17 years, he has seen many doors open in his career.
"At SNR, I was always encouraged to let my curiosity drive my studies. I'm so grateful for that early example. Curiosity about the world remains the tool I use most often in my journalism work." Diane Cameron Lawrence (BS, Class of 77), is a freelance writer and producer based in Louisville, Kentucky.
Announcing the President's Challenge for Graduate Student Support
University of Michigan President, Mary Sue Coleman, understands the need for increased graduate support and has launched a new initiative to leverage the generous support of our donors. Beginning September 1, 2007, the President's Office will match fifty cents on every dollar raised for graduate student support. Learn more about the President's Challenge!

SNRE and Dean Rosina Bierbaum continue to shape discussion on climate change adaptation
Confronting Climate Change: Dean Rosina Bierbaum and colleagues analyze environmental changes facing the global community and outline strategies for coping with the likely risks.
At least eight U-M researchers, including Dean Bierbaum, contributed to the latest set of climate-change reports issued by the U.N.-sponsored panel that shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize on Oct. 12 with former Vice President Al Gore.
Dean Rosina Bierbaum, an expert in environmental policy, has been named to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a prestigious society that recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions in scholarly and professionial fields.

Landscape Architecture and Terrestrial Ecology Welcome New Faculty
Chris Ellis begins his first semester as Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture program this fall; Byoung-Suk Kweon joins the Institute of Social Research as Research Investigator, and the Landscape Architecture program as its newest Adjunct Assistant Professor; and Inez Ibanez will join the Terrestrial Ecology program in January, 2008.
