Students will learn the basic elements of civil engineering as well as the technical, ecological and aesthetic premises for applying engineering methods to landscape design. Engineering skills will be developed with lecture information and extensive studio/labs that integrate conventional and integrative problem solving. The focal technique to be mastered is site grading- how and when to reshape the land in order to achieve outstanding design with great environmental integrity. Integrated topics include engineering of stormwater management systems, earthwork calculation methods, linear corridor design- roads and path systems, piping systems, retaining walls, steps and athletic fields. Across all course topics, the underlying theme will be the achievement of sustainable design through the use of a best practices approach to engineering. For this reason, stormwater management will always in sharp focus.
